Steel Company, 1st Platoon glides away from the base without fanfare. Lights out, radio silent, we shoot into the city at dangerous speeds. Captain Davidson, looking indestructible in his new PDT AEA, is back with Sergeant in Angel squad. Lieutenant Bastian moved herself to Dragon for a better span of control in the event the platoon needs to divide and conquer.

“Not bad,” Brock announces over the LAA comms. “This highway is a way better surface than anything I’ve driven an Assaulter on before.”

Rogers drives the Beast squad LAA, Kelly steers for Chimera, and Omaris brings up the rear with Dragon’s vehicle. “I’m still looking forward to our race, Brock,” Omaris says.

“Me too, kid,” Brock says.

“Don’t think I haven’t figured out the deck was stacked against me.” Omaris’s declaration brings laughter from everyone in my Assaulter, including Semsroth and Mayer.

“Busted,” I say.

Semsroth spreads his hands in a “what can I say” gesture.

In the cockpit, Brock accelerates. “Captain, we’re approaching a barricade. Looks like Skull work.”

“Can you drive through it or over it?” Davidson asks.

“Appears flimsy,” Brock says. “But you know these jerks are devious. Remember the waterworks on the Slog.”

“How could I forget,” Davidson says, then radios Bastion in Delta’s LAA. “It’s about to get rough. If we stall out pushing through this roadblock, keep going. Take the lead, and we will fall into the tail gunner position.”

“Roger that,” Bastian says.

“Brace for impact,” Brock warns.

“Be ready to step out and DSW,” Sergeant adds. “If we get hung up in this tangle of debris, there will be a Skull ambush right afterward. Count on it.”

“Three, two, one, bammo!” Brock shouts, slamming the LAA into a three-meter-high pile of civilian cars, concrete blocks, and bodies. Just like on the Slog.

My PDT armor and the LAA safety harness minimize the force transfer of the impact. I feel it, but it’s almost pleasant. The LAA, however, struggles to maintain momentum.

“These Skulls are smarter than they look,” Brock says. “The barricade is about five butt hairs taller than I could clear with the LAA antigrav set to maximum.”

“You can’t fly three meters in a LAA,” Jamison shouts over the noise.

“You have to bounce it,” Brock says. “But don’t tell Omaris until after the race. It’s one of my secret tricks.”

“Then how would the Skulls know about it?” I ask.

“Hey, come on. That wounds me. You know I was famous as hell on the Slog. All the Skulls fear me!” Brock powers through the debris, nearly stopping for several seconds but powering through instead.

A squad of Skulls race from the shadows, jumping on the roof. I hear them screaming like an angrier version of Skull-ka right before Edwards in Beast squad opens fire with their LAA’s heavy blaster, sweeping our enemies from our vehicle.

“Well done, 1st Platoon,” Davidson says. “Can we pick up the pace? I didn’t realize I’d put old women in the driver’s seats.”

“That sounds like a challenge, sir,” Brock says.

“It is.” Davidson smiles. “Get us to the square. We have PDT LAAs to steal.”

“Then
